Heinrich Ludolph Wendland’s travel report
The research and editing project “Der Reisebericht des Heinrich Ludolph Wendland von 1820” constitutes a cooperation between the Centre of Garden Art and Landscape Architecture and the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Bibliothek and is sponsored by the VGH Trust.
In July 2010 the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Bibliothek – Lower Saxony State Library (GWLB) received the Wendland estate of the family of Herrenhausen court gardeners as a deposit. The travel report written by Heinrich Ludolph Wendlands (1792–1869), which the court gardener drew up on his five-month educational trip through Germany, Austria and Switzerland in 1820, represents a source hitherto unexplored in the estate. This travel report is a testimony to garden history and to the history of the profession and is of outstanding quality.
The project aims to transcribe, edit and scientifically evaluate as well as to publish the Herrenhausen court gardener’s writings. It also has a pilot function in the multistage research programme “Travels and travel reports of court gardeners in the context of a history of the professionalization of the careers of senior gardeners – travel diaries of senior court and government officials as a testimony to European garden knowledge”.
