CGL-Visiting-Scholars 2010

Prof. Dr. Gert Gröning

Prof. Dr. Gert Gröning of the Universität der Künste Berlin was CGL-Visiting-Scholar in December 2009 and January 2010 to prepare a joint book project with the CGL on gardens and garden design in the 20th century and for discussions with CGL doctoral fellows on their theses.

Furthermore, he contributed to the seminar "Zur Gestaltung von Haus- und Villengärten im frühen 20. Jahrhundert“ ("On the design of house and villa gardens in the early 20th century") of the master program Landscape Architecture. In the context of the seminar he led a field trip to the Bücherei des Deutschen Gartenbaus (German Horticultural Library) in Berlin-Charlottenburg as well as to the gardens in the residential area Onkel-Toms-Hütte in Berlin-Zehlendorf.

He gave two lectures at the Fakultät für Architektur und Landschaft  (Faculty of Architecture and Landscape) of the Leibniz Universität Hannover, one on „Der ‚kommende Garten‘. Anmerkungen zu einer europäischen Diskussion um die Gartenkultur im ersten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts“ (The 'coming garden'. Remarks on a European discussion on garden culture in the first third of the 20th century"), and the other one on „Die Alster in Roggendorf, Leberecht Migge und der Park von Haase – Eine Betrachtung aus 100-jähriger Distanz“ ("The Alster in Roggendorf, Leberecht Migge and the park of Haase – a reflection from a one-hundred-year distance").

On February 24, 2010, he organised a workshop in Berlin for the preparation of an interdisciplinary CGL-conference on "Gartenkultur in Russland“ ("Garden culture in Russia").

Much attention was given to a public lecture by Professor Gröning on November 15, 2010; a result of his stay as CGL-Visiting-Scholar. He lectured in the Leibnizhaus, the guest house Gästehaus of the Leibniz Universität Hannover, on "Irma Franzen-Heinrichsdorff (1892-1983). Der ungewöhnliche Lebensweg der ersten Absolventin auf dem Gebiet der Gartenarchitektur an der Lehr- und Forschungsanstalt für Gartenbau in Berlin-Dahlem" ("Irma Franzen Heinrichsdorff (1892-1983). The unusual path of life of the first female graduate in the area of landscape gardening at the Lehr- und Forschungsanstalt für Gartenbau in Berlin Dahlem”). Gert Gröning significantly extended this lecture and added a so far unpublished plan and sketch collection and it was published as volume 22 of the CGL-Studies series in 2014, edited by Stefanie Hennecke and Joachim Wolschke-Bulmahn under the title "Von Dangast nach Colorado Springs: Irma Franzen Heinrichsdorff 1892-1983. Leben und Werk der ersten Absolventin eines Gartenarchitekturstudiums" ("From Dangast to Colorado Springs: Irma Franzen Heinrichsdorff 1892-1983. Life and work of the first female graduate of a landscape gardening degree”).

Prof. Dr. Gabriel Motzkin

Prof. Dr. Gabriel Motzkin, Director of the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, was guest at the CGL from January 27 to 29, 2010. His stay mainly served the preparation of the workshop „Environmental Policy and Landscape Architecture“, which was jointly planned with the CGL and hosted by the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute on March 23 - 24, 2011 in Jerusalem. On January 28, 2010 Prof. Motzkin lectured publicly on „Being afraid of the environment" in the Künstlerhaus/Stiftung Niedersachsen.
